What is the presentación de 3 años?
The presentación de tres años (three-year presentation) is a blessing for a child who has reached the age of three. Parents bring her to church to thank God for her first years of life and to ask for His protection as she grows. The tradition connects to two moments families often mention: the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, which Catholics celebrate on February 2, and the old tradition that the Virgin Mary was presented in the Temple as a little girl.
It's celebrated for boys too. Girls usually wear a long dress, often in the style of a small princess or a mini quinceañera gown. Boys usually wear a suit or a charro outfit.
In Spanish you'll hear it called presentación de 3 años, presentación de tres años, or simply mi presentación. In English, families usually say "3 year old presentation."
What happens at the presentación Mass?
Every parish does it a little differently. Some hold a special blessing for one family, some present several children during a regular Sunday Mass, and some do a short ceremony after Mass. A typical presentación looks like this:
- The family and the padrinos walk in with the child, who carries her candle or her bouquet.
- She sits or kneels at the front, often on a small kneeling pillow.
- The priest says a blessing over her and her family, and often blesses her Bible, rosary and medal.
- The padrinos and parents may light her candle or hand her the blessed items.
- In many families, she leaves her bouquet for the Virgin Mary as a thank-you.
- Photos at the altar, then everyone heads to the party.
Tip: call your parish two or three months ahead. Some ask for a copy of the baptism certificate, some ask the padrinos to attend a short talk, and many only schedule presentaciones on certain days.
What do you need for a presentación de 3 años?

The candle

The dress
Most girls wear a long dress in white, ivory or a soft color like pink, light blue or lilac, sometimes with a tulle skirt, a little cape or a small tiara. A few tips from moms who've done it:
- Choose a dress she can sit, kneel and walk in. Three-year-olds don't stand still for an hour.
- Bring a second, comfortable outfit for the party.
- Pick the dress first, then match the candle, pillow, Bible and decorations to it.
- Do her hair simply. A short Mass with a three-year-old is easier without 40 bobby pins.
Celebration ideas for after the Mass
The party can be a simple lunch at home or a full celebration with a hall, a DJ and a theme. Popular ideas:
- A theme she loves: princesses, butterflies, a charro or vaquerita theme, or her favorite movie.
